A Little About Us
Daniel Byler started the lumbermill Byler Lumber in Newport, NY in 1989. In 2009 Daniel and his wife Sylvia moved the family to Bennington, IN and he opened what is now called Southern Hardwoods Inc. Daniel and Sylvia grew up in an Amish community in Newport, NY. which has instilled the strong work ethic and desire to treat everyone who comes to Southern Hardwoods as family.
Mike Bontrager is the foreman/sawyer for Southern Hardwoods. He started working for Southern Hardwoods in the spring of 2023 and started out being a stacker. He has worked in multiple areas of the company. When he isn’t at Southern Hardwoods you can find him power paragliding or hunting.
Bill Walter is our yard man and vet. He came to Southern Hardwoods in 2024 with a wealth of experience in running equipment and driving rigs. He spent 12 years in the Army as a truck driver. He has worked for and been a logger. When he isn’t at Southern Hardwoods you can find him at this farm taking care of the animals or working the ground.
Dylan Walter is our edger. He started with Southern Hardwoods in 2024. He is currently in school working towards a masters degree in public relations. He loves to read and take care of his goats.
Xavier Byrd is the newest addition to the Southern Hardwoods family. He is the father of 2 and engaged to Olivia. He has known Daniel for 10 years and has known Mike since he was young. He loves to work and when he isn’t working he can be found with his family or hunting. He is currently in training to take over the sawyer position.

Ethan “Wade” Anderson is our stacker. Ethan has been married to Jami for 4 years and have been together for 14 years. He likes to work and to fix things. He wants to take his family to Yellowstone and Colorado.
